Science Communication Workshops and Seminars

The NIMH IRP Office of Fellowship Training (OFT) sponsors a variety of science communication workshops and seminars for all NIMH IRP Fellows. Developing and improving your science communication skills can help you effectively relay your research findings to non-experts which can in turn lead to research support or funding.

  • Speaking About Science Seminar: Introduction to Essential Communication Skills
    This seminar is for all trainees to learn foundational skills to communicate their research for multiple audiences. This seminar is held annually in March/April.
  • Credly Science Communication Badge
    Trainees of all levels have the ability to earn a digital badge to demonstrate they’ve learned important communication skills and have gained experience in presenting biomedical research findings to a scientific audience.
  • Chalk Talks Workshop
    This workshop is for trainees to learn the components that make an effective chalk talk and provide a safe place to practice new skills. This is workshop is most appropriate for Predoc IRTAs, Postdoc IRTAs, Visiting Fellows, Research Fellows, Clinical Fellows, and Staff Scientists/Clinicians. This workshop is held annually in November.
  • Individual Coaching Sessions
    Predoc IRTAs, Postdoc IRTAs, Visiting Fellows, Research Fellows, Clinical Fellows, and Staff Scientists/Clinicians can request a one-on-one public speaking coaching session with Communications Specialist, Scott Morgan.
  • Interview Skills Workshop for Senior Trainees
    This workshop will teach Predoc IRTAs, Postdoc IRTAs, Visiting Fellows, Research Fellows, Clinical Fellows, and Staff Scientists/Clinicians key techniques to prepare for professional interviews. This workshop is held annually in August.

  • Negotiation Skills Workshop
    This workshop will teach Predoc IRTAs, Postdoc IRTAs, Visiting Fellows, Research Fellows, Clinical Fellows, and Staff Scientists/Clinicians effective strategies for handling negotiations. This workshop is held annually in October.
  • Three-Minute Talks (TmT) Coaching and Competition
    Trainees of all levels have the opportunity to compete in the Three-Minute Talks (TmT) Competition by communicating their research in concise three-minute oral presentations. Round One of the competition is held annually between May and August. The TmT Finals Competition is held annually at the NIMH IRP Fellows’ Scientific Training Day.
