PGY4 Residency Training and Clinical Fellowship Program & NIMH

>> GIOIA GUERRIERI: My name is Gioia Guerrieri. I completed the PGY-4 residency training program and completed an additional 3-year Clinical Fellowship program in the Section of Behavioral Endocrinology at NIMH.

As a Clinical Research fellow in Behavioral Endocrinology, I studied the effect of hormones on mood and behavior in Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, Postpartum Depression, and Perimenopause-onset Depression. I would absolutely recommend this program to a medical resident who is ready to take the next step toward regulatory medicine or an academic medical career.

And the skills I learned during my fellowship program were invaluable. I was encouraged to apply for the Residency Training program at NIMH through my mentors at Mayo Clinic when I was a psychiatry resident - and I'm glad I did. It provided an amazing opportunity to complete my 4th year of psychiatry residency and also combine it with my first year of clinical fellowship.

I'm often asked what the transition from a traditional residency program to the NIMH is like, so I will briefly explain. First, the ACGME accredited PGY-4 program satisfies required PGY-4 didactics and training; it provides the opportunity to take call for the Clinical Center; and it also allows psychiatrists to start their own clinical work - in moonlighting or private practice through a pathway called outside activities.

Additionally, the program enables candidates to immerse themselves in the laboratory with which they matched; and offers career and additional training support outside of required didactics. And yes, there is strong support for board exam preparation leading to board certification. Graduating from this ACGME program merits a certificate of completion for the 4th year of residency from the NIMH.

And - as an added value for many medical residents and fellows - there is an opportunity to apply for loan repayment through the Intramural ACGME General Research Path or the Intramural Competitive Loan Repayment Program for each year of fellowship.

In addition to the benefits of working in the Section of Behavioral Endocrinology, this program provided many opportunities for me in terms of leadership and professional development, as well as career training. I held positions on various committees, presented at National Scientific Meetings, received career training, and an NIMH curriculum research certificate.

Again, I highly recommend the NIMH PGY-4 program and subsequent clinical fellowship. The program enabled me the ability to gain expertise in Reproductive Psychiatry, Publish in peer-review journals, and Develop the expertise I needed to be successful in Regulatory Medicine at FDA and in my clinical practice.
