The NIMH Director’s Innovation Speaker Series - CNS Drug Discovery: Multiple Challenges, Multiple Opportunities

Date and Time

February 26, 2019

Sponsor(s): NIMH Division of Extramural Activities

On February 26, 2019, Husseini K. Manji, MD, FRCPC will present “CNS Drug Discovery: Multiple Challenges, Multiple Opportunities” as part of the NIMH Director’s Innovation Speaker Series. In his lecture, Dr. Manji will focus on the challenges and opportunities associated with drug development in central nervous system (CNS) disorders.

Neuropsychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, or addiction are disproportionately disabling because so many of them begin early and are chronic or recurring. Some pharmaceutical companies have stopped doing drug discovery, but there is an opportunity for a global and collaborative scientific approach to research using new medical technologies that could revolutionize the development of treatment options.

Dr. Manji is Global Therapeutic Head for Neuroscience at Janssen Research & Development, LLC, one of the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Manji was previously Director of the NIH Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program, the largest program of its kind in the world. The major focus of Dr. Manji’s research is the investigation of disease- and treatment-induced changes in gene and protein networks that regulate synaptic and neural plasticity in neuropsychiatric disorders.

Registration and Parking

This event is open without prior registration to all NIH staff and the public. Parking is available at a nominal fee. A government-issued photo identification card (such as an NIH ID or driver's license) is required to enter the building. The audio of this event will be available over WebEx.

Background

The NIMH Director’s Innovation Speaker Series was started to encourage broad, interdisciplinary thinking in the development of scientific initiatives and programs, and to press for theoretical leaps in science over the continuation of incremental thinking. Innovation speakers are encouraged to describe their work from the perspective of breaking through existing boundaries and developing successful new ideas, as well as working outside their initial area of expertise in ways that have pushed their fields forward. We encourage discussions of the meaning of innovation, creativity, breakthroughs, and paradigm-shifting.
