Program Overview

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for a Staff Scientist position in the Intramural Research Program (IRP), Behavioral Endocrinology Branch (BEB). The BEB conducts research studies on reproductive, endocrine-related mood disorders (RMDs) such as perimenopausal depression, postpartum depression, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, with the goal of identifying better ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat mental illness to improve women’s health. Toward this goal, a major, collaborative research focus of the BEB is to uncover the genetic underpinnings of RMDs, as well as molecularly characterize the cellular responses of ovarian steroids in women with RMDs.

Position Overview

The Staff Scientist’s primary responsibilities will include the oversight and performance of independent, basic-science research related to the molecular characterization of reproductive endocrine-related mood disorders. They will oversee all aspects and management of the BEB’s derived cell lines and NGS protocols in the Branch. In addition, the individual will support, train, and mentor lab members, establish and conduct collaborative research, present at national/international meetings, and write manuscripts.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a robust academic background in neuroendocrinology and the biology of ovarian steroid hormones, with a track record of scientific publications, as well as strong written and verbal communication skills. A PhD is required. Exceptionally qualified candidates will have specialized experience signifying their ability to coordinate and perform research with multidisciplinary collaborators and, especially, clinical research teams (including familiarity working with clinical protocols, as well as assessing and interacting with enrolled study participants).”
