Transforming the understanding
and treatment of mental illnesses.

Investigators

NIMH Intramural Research Program (IRP) investigators, which include scientists, physicians, and clinicians, conduct research ranging from studies into mechanisms of normal brain function at the behavioral, systems, cellular, and molecular levels, to clinical investigations into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness.

Investigators

Approximately 40 Principal Investigators (PIs) lead research groups that conduct biomedical or behavioral studies in our laboratories and clinics in Bethesda, Maryland.

Core Directors

Core Directors head research support facilities that provide access to instruments, technologies, expert consultation, and other services to investigators within and outside of NIH. They may also conduct research focused on methodology innovation.

Service/Team Directors

Service and Team Directors lead groups that provide specific types of clinical or technological support to researchers in the NIMH IRP, and sometimes beyond NIMH. They may also conduct independent and collaborative research.

Adjunct Investigators

NIMH Adjunct Investigators are scientists who work in the NIMH intramural setting or closely with NIMH research groups toward the NIMH IRP mission, but their primary career appointment is elsewhere.

Scientists Emeritus

Scientists Emeritus are distinguished IRP scientists who have retired but maintain an ongoing working relationship with the NIMH IRP.
